RRB NTPC Typing Test Rules 2026: The 5% Mistake Formula Explained

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) typing skill test is one of the most strictly evaluated exams in India. Unlike simple WPM calculators, RRB uses a highly specific mathematical formula to penalize errors. Exam Parameters & Requirements

• Duration: Exactly 10 minutes.

The Official Calculation Formula

The RRB evaluation software calculates your final speed in the following steps:

1. Total Strokes Typed: Counted by the system (e.g., 1600 strokes).
2. Total Words: Total Strokes divided by 5 (e.g., 1600 / 5 = 320 words).
3. Ignorable Mistakes: 5% of Total Words (e.g., 5% of 320 = 16 mistakes ignored).
4. Penalty: (Total Mistakes made - Ignorable Mistakes) × 10.
5. Net Speed: (Total Words - Penalty) / Time in minutes.

How to Clear the Test

Because the penalty is so severe (1 mistake = 10 words lost), your primary focus must be Accuracy. It is far better to type slightly slower with 98% accuracy than to type extremely fast with 90% accuracy.
