SSC CGL & CHSL Typing Test Rules 2026: Half vs Full Mistakes Explained

If you are preparing for the SSC CGL (DEST) or SSC CHSL Typing Test, achieving the required Words Per Minute (WPM) is only half the battle. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) uses a very strict and specific formula to evaluate your accuracy. To clear the cutoff, you must understand exactly how the software penalizes your errors.

SSC divides typing errors into two categories: Full Mistakes (100% Error) and Half Mistakes (50% Error). Let's break down exactly what triggers these penalties so you can practice smarter.

1. What is a Full Mistake (100% Error)?

A Full Mistake is the most severe penalty. It occurs when a word is completely wrong, skipped, or inappropriately added. The following actions will cost you a Full Mistake:

❌ Word Omission

If you skip typing a word that is present in the master passage, it is counted as a Full Mistake. (Example: Passage says "The quick brown fox", but you type "The brown fox" — skipping "quick" is a full mistake).

❌ Word Substitution

If you replace a word in the passage with a completely different word. (Example: Typing "The fast brown fox" instead of "The quick brown fox").

❌ Word Addition

If you type an extra word that does not exist in the original passage, you will be penalized with a Full Mistake for that extra word.

2. What is a Half Mistake (50% Error)?

A Half Mistake occurs when you type the correct word, but make a minor formatting or character error. Two half mistakes equal one full mistake. These include:

⚠️ Spelling Errors

Typing the word with incorrect spelling, missing a letter, or transposing letters. (Example: Typing "speling" instead of "spelling" or "teh" instead of "the").

⚠️ Capitalization Errors

Using a capital letter where a small letter is required, or using a small letter where a capital is required. (Example: Typing "india" instead of "India").

⚠️ Spacing Errors

If you do not leave a space between two words (e.g., "IloveIndia"), or if you put a space between characters within a single word (e.g., "In dia").

3. How is the Error Percentage Calculated?

SSC generally evaluates speed based on total keystrokes (depressions). Standard SSC rules state that 5 keystrokes = 1 Word. Therefore, if a passage requires 1750 keystrokes in 10 minutes, the required speed is exactly 35 WPM.

Total Errors = (Full Mistakes) + (Half Mistakes / 2)
Error % = (Total Errors / Total Words in Passage) × 100

Note on Permissible Errors: For most SSC categories (UR), the maximum allowed error percentage is usually around 5% to 7% for CGL DEST, and 7% for CHSL (relaxations apply for reserved categories). If your error percentage crosses this threshold, you will be disqualified regardless of how fast you typed.

4. Pro Tips to Maximize Your Score

  • Never Skip Lines: SSC software is notorious for losing track if you skip an entire line. This will result in 10-15 consecutive Full Mistakes, instantly failing you. Use your finger on the screen/paper to track your reading line.
  • Accuracy > Raw Speed: It is better to type at 38 WPM with 99% accuracy than 45 WPM with 88% accuracy. Always slow down slightly on complex words or capitalization.
  • Master the Backspace Rule: In modern SSC exams, backspace is usually allowed, but over-relying on it wastes precious seconds. Practice with Strict Mode to build initial muscle memory.
